About Enochian

The Pieces at Play

In order to know what's going on, you need to understand two main things: Gematria (of which I have a few opinions) and the Enochian/Angelic/Adamic language (which makes little sense without some backstory).

Let's hop to it.

Gematria

The Ancient Hebrew and Ancient Greek languages were considered sacred by their speakers. Out of these cultures arose a linguistic-arithmetical practice called gematria (or isopsephy for the Ancient Greeks).

Simply: each letter in the alphabet has a numerical value. The sum of the letters of a word is considered symbolic of that word. Naturally, there is overlap, where the sum of letters for two entirely different words is the same—and that's where the fun begins.

Consider the following cipher:

   A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11,
   L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21,
   V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z=26

Consider the following word: "wisdom". Consulting the chart above, you can take the number of each letter and add them together, grabbing 23 for W, 9 for I, 19 for S, and so on. If you get all the letters and add them together, you end up with the following:

23 + 9 + 19 + 4 + 15 + 13 = 83

Unsurprisingly, there are other words that add together to the sum of 83. One interesting one is "gnosis". Again, taking 7 for G, 14 for N, 15 for O, and so on, you end up with this:

7 + 14 + 15 + 19 + 9 + 19 = 83

Were we an ancient people who believed that Language as a whole was sacred—and our language especially sacred—mayhaps, by discovering "wisdom" and "gnosis" both equating to 83, have identified a hidden, secret link between the two words. Perhaps, by achieving gnosis (or knowledge) of God, we also attain wisdom. Or by attaining wisdom, we come to know God.

That said, other that equate to 83 are: football, autism, spring, monkey, election, collapse, and so on.

In addition to adding the letters of a single word, you can also manipulate full words (which is beyond the scope of this site's tool) by adding words together (which can be seen as the numerical union of those words) or by multiplying them (which can be seen as finding the child of those words). You can also add the individual numbers that are the sum of a word to connect to its root idea.

For example: my magical motto is ZIR PLIGNAPHE MATORB, which translates as (literally): "I am / the eternal cry / echoing". I have a whole thing about how I discovered my magical motto, which you can read here if you'd like.

Anyway, using the Aurum Solis cipher (which is the cipher that I think makes the most sense and yields the most interesting correspondences), you wind up with the following: 179 + 325 + 465. The sum is 969. If you take the individual numbers and add them (i.e., 9 + 6 + 9), the sum is 24. An Enochian word associated with the number 24 is MAH, which means "in darkness"—which is an appropriate root idea because my personal aspiration is to loose a cry so loudly that it echoes, even into the void.

Someone who has been involved in the occult a lot longer than I have has suggested that gematria started as a meditation exercise. With as many words as there are, there's always an meditation exercise at-hand: find two words with the same sum, focus on their meanings, and try to find connections between them. And that's it—no more a special link than the one we make ourselves.

Gematria as a Magical Tool

So words can become numbers, words sometimes share the same number, and you can play with the numbers to get even more words and numbers. As I often am wont to ask: what's the point?

If we take to heart that things with the same number are interconnected, it's conceivable that we could use one object in lieu of another if they share the same number.

Weird example that's maybe not the best, but work with me here:

Let's say you are doing a working that requires gold, perhaps as an offering. The Angelic/Enochian word AUDCAL ("gold, philosophical mercury") enumerates to 138, and the word COLLAL ("sleeves") also enumerates to 138. You may not have gold to offer, but you could use sleeves made with a golden fabric as a stand-in—after all, if AUDCAL and COLLAL are both 138, then AUDCAL and COLLAL, in some sense, are each other.

I just wouldn't recommend trying to invest in sleeves (or gold for that matter).1

Another use-case is "testing" spirits of experiences. For instance, let's say you are astral projecting2 and traveling through space and time, and eventually decide to travel through the heavens. You come into contact with different angels, have a challenging experience that, for whatever reason, reminds you of some especially traumatic event. You're done with the experience and want to go home. Suddenly, an angel who is sad and weeping approaches you, takes you by your hand, and you come to in normal reality.

You ask yourself, "What could the significance of the weeping and mourning be?" You decide to consult Enochian Gematria instead of Hebrew or Greek, and you discover: CAOSGA, "the earth," and SER, "mourning, lamentation", both equate to 287. Therefore, it could be interpreted that your want to go home brought to you an angelic aspect of the Earth, a symbol of Home in the cosmic scheme of things.

It is also an option to step outside of the Angelic/Enochian language and consider other numeric correspondences. For instance, two of the numbers associated with Sol, the sun, are 36 and 111 (cf. this link (opens in a new tab) for further information about the number squares). BIAL ("the voice") enumerates to 36 and CAMLIAX ("spoke (past tense of "speak")") enumerates to 111. A voice is solar in that Sol relates to Tiphareth, which often relates to music. Additionally, the voice and the content that it contains is a higher expression of self.

111 + 36 = 147, which is the enumeration of ARDEN ("the universal mind"). To phrase it another way: the child of two suns is shared consciousness.

Final thoughts on Gematria before moving on

Yes, some of these examples are kind of silly and ridiculous. Yes, gematria as a whole can feel extremely conspiracy-theorist, and almost arbitrary at times. So is magic—it's also silly and ridiculous sometimes, so why should this be any exception?

It's worth remembering: symbols become alive and gain the agency to act on our behalves when we engage in magic. Numbers and words can become allies. Symbols as living things can grant agency to symbols they are tied to, and all of these allies can work on your behalf.

The more you understand about how things are connected, the more you and the universe can conspire together towards the accomplishment of your Will.

The Enochian Systems
